Damelin Corporate Social Investment

At Educor, we believe that we have a fundamental responsibility to assist in improving the lives of individuals and communities in South Africa through our work. We are actively involved in corporate social investment (CSI) initiatives that are aligned to our business strategy and contribute to our overall mission and vision.

Educor Group Initiatives

Educor Foundation

Our Chairman Leo Chetty launched in 2011 the Educor Foundation in line with his vision to educate the nation and make service excellence accessible to all. Educor, through its brands, undertakes various Corporate Social Investment (CSI) initiatives, partnerships and community projects.

KwaZulu-Natal Spousal Office of the Premier - A joint venture between the KwaZulu-Natal Premier’s Spousal Office and Damelin led to the awarding of 62 bursaries to disadvantaged students. Bursaries are awarded annually. Recipients may study towards short courses, certificates, diplomas or a Damelin degree at any of the Damelin campuses in KZN, through full-time and part-time study. Each student will receive a bursary, ranging from R10 000 to R75 000. This project aims to assist students from impoverished backgrounds who have no access to funding for education.

The KwaZulu-Natal Legislature - Educor has collaborated with the Chief Whip of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature, the Honourable Lizzie Shabalala to grant bursaries to worthy candidates annually. The partnership extends to a joint venture to establish a Section 21 Company to assist youth in education.

Damelin

Damelin Awards Bursaries at Youth Spirit Awards - The winner and runners up of the Amy Biehl Foundation Youth Spirit Awards were awarded bursaries worth R40 000. Kiara Ramklass, Ruth Allderman and Miranda Kantor, were the proud recipients. The awards pay tribute to young members of the community, who have contributed to community upliftment, and helping underprivileged youth.

Damelin and Foschini Group have partnered in a massive R10 million bursary programme over the past four years, where families have the opportunity to further their studies at any of the 17 Damelin campuses nationwide or at Damelin Correspondence College (DCC). Up to 400 bursaries are allocated every year to Foschini Club members, (including spouses and children). Winners receive a bursary of up to R10 000 each.

Damelin sponsored R140 000 worth of bursaries at the Miss Teen India SA pageant held at a glamorous show-stopping event at Coastlands Umhlanga, 30 December 2012. The reigning queen for 2013, Miss Lisha Narayan (19) and first and second princesses Crystal Hariaran (18) and Timita Butharam (16), represent the Damelin brand as our ambassadors for the year. Damelin is proud to be associated with the Miss Teen India SA pageant, as it provides a platform to integrate beauty with academia. The winners have the opportunity to study various courses of their choice to build their careers and increase their chances of finding employment.

Crystal Point Secondary - As part of its Corporate Social Investment (CSI) initiative, Damelin, in association with Miss Teen India SA winner, Lisha Narayan awarded five disadvantaged matriculants of Crystal Point Secondary School bursaries of R20 000 each, totalling a whopping R100 000, to study at Damelin. As part of her prizes, Miss Teen India SA was awarded a R100 000 bursary from Damelin, which she could not utilise as she was already studying medicine full time. She suggested that the bursary be awarded to a deserving candidate at her ex high school, Crystal Point Secondary. Damelin welcomed this idea as it tied in with its community engagement initiative to assist disadvantaged secondary schools across the country, and went ahead to drive this initiative.

Community Projects

Various projects are also undertaken at campus level, involving staff and students in the upliftment of their surrounding communities.

Damelin Randburg students raised a whopping R19 640.24 and donated groceries that could fill a car to the children of the Princess Alice Adoption Home.

Congratulations to Damelin Boksburg for scooping the PMR Gold Award for the Ekurhuleni Region, for the third time. The Boksburg campus was chosen for its outreach programme in the community and dedication to education in the Boksburg area. The Gold Award is awarded to tertiary institutions that make commendable efforts to boost brand awareness and community outreach programmes. The award also acknowledges the hard work from the Damelin staff members, who have contributed to the overall success. A strong brand requires a strong team, and Damelin believes in its staff. We employ people who are skilled in their areas of expertise and ensure that day-to-day activities run smoothly in order to meet daily targets. Well done to the Boksburg staff for their continued commitment to education.

Fifteen children from the St Francis Care Centre in Boksburg were treated to a fun-filled day at the Johannesburg Zoo on 22 November. St Francis is a non-profit organisation established for caring for the needs of people living with HIV/AIDS in the Ekurhuleni region. Damelin Boksburg was able to get half price for all tickets – allowing more children to enjoy a trip to the zoo. Our students joined in the spirit of giving by sponsoring drinks and sweets for the trip. Well done to the Damelin students for adopting this worthy project.

In the hearts of many South Africans is the will to make a difference to those less fortunate - On 2nd September 2013, Damelin Boksburg students and staff were able to experience that thanks to another life-changing initiative arranged by Damelin Boksburg staff. A major charity drive was held at the Damelin Campus in Boksburg in order to celebrate the beginning of spring. Damelin was fortunate to have Dale Horne, one of the 12 finalists of Mr. South Africa, present on the day. The event was held in conjunction with several companies, including Virgin Active, Nedbank, ABSA and Mini Auto Alpine Boksburg. A massive charity drive for the St Francis Care Centre was put into place before the event, by Damelin Boksburg students and staff, who had been collecting tinned food and clothing. “The highlight of my day was spending time with the Rainbow Cottage children. These little guys have been neglected or abandoned; some from birth, others from ages up to 5 years. The majority of them are HIV positive, yet the constant smiles and joy on their faces put life into perspective for me”, said Mr SA Finalist, Dale Horne.

The much anticipated Mr and Miss Damelin contest takes place across our various campuses throughout the year and is one of the highlights in the campus events calendar, attracting high media attention. Proceeds from the event are donated to a charity closest to the hearts of the campus staff members.

Knowledge Box in Association with East Coast Radio – Over 600 ecstatic students greeted Damelin and ECR staff at a jubilant ‘story-book’ function at the Zuzokuhle Primary School on Madiba day, 18 July 2013 to receive a donation of 300 books for underprivileged learners in Inanda – marking International Madiba Day. Damelin was the first charity on board this campaign, and aims to roll-out a similar campaign across its 17 campuses nationwide.

702 Birthday Wish Campaign – Damelin was recently given the heart-warming opportunity to join Talk Radio 702 in giving hope to 26 year old domestic worker Nyathi Bekithemba (Florence) from Soweto, as part of Talk Radio’s Birthday Wish Campaign. Damelin proudly partnered with this initiative and donated R15 000 for Florence to complete a course in Junior Bookkeeping, and change her circumstances from a domestic worker.

Braamfontein Donates Hundreds of Computers - Students at Damelin Braamfontein sourced 120 computers and 35 printers for Teboho Community Trust, on 26 September 2012. Teboho Community Trust was started in Soweto and offers educational and life skills resources, programmes and services to a dramatically growing population of HIV/AIDS orphans/vulnerable adolescents.

Mr and Miss Damelin Menlyn Give Back to the Community - Mr and Miss Damelin Menlyn 2012, Ricardo de Carvalho and Genna Smillie, are leading by example, and took on the challenge of raising over R6 000 for the Childhood Cancer Foundation (CHOC). CHOC provides holistic support for children, and for families of children suffering from cancer and life-threatening blood disorders.

Customer Care Centre: 0861 338 267

In 2013, Educor established a centralised Customer Care Centre to handle all escalated queries from the face-to-face and distance brands. The Customer Care Centre was set up as a central location for the Group. The Centre fields queries and complaints from students, parents, regulatory bodies, the media and the community. The objective is to provide procedures to control the processing of complaints as a way of improving services to our customers, and enhances the public image of our brands, ensuring that complaints are acknowledged courteously, investigated efficiently and resolved timeously.

The result has been a dedicated team, logging, tracking and handling complaints within a five day turnaround time. To date, we have put together a Customer Care policy, established Customer Care committees at each campus and site and are currently extending the centralised Centre to be a fully functional arm of Educor, focusing on resolving complaints and prioritising customer care.

Educor strives to be a socially responsible organisation in every way.
